My Great Grandmother was a genealogist and artist and greatly influenced my path as a visual artist. She collected family photos, stories and records after reading Alex Haley's "Roots" in the 1970's. I inherited this collection before she passed. She also was a beautiful, self taught oil painter. I own only one of the very few she made.
I began researching my family history and collecting family lore when I was 10 years old with the assistance of my Great Grandmother and Grandmother. From this I learned to draw the human figure and simultaneously create a narrative within my own drawings.
The rural farm I grew up on as a Queer, Black boy greatly influences my work...It was here that I began to unpack not only my identity but also developed a deep curiosity into my own genealogy.
